Importance of the Topic

Forensic investigations require rapid, accurate identification of diverse materials such as narcotics, explosives, residues and biological traces. Raman spectroscopy, classified as a Category A analytical method by SWGDRUG, offers non-destructive, high-specificity analysis and minimal sample preparation. Its portability enables in-field screening as well as detailed laboratory analysis, improving productivity and safety in forensic workflows.

Objectives and Overview

This application note presents B&W Tek’s Raman Solution Suite designed for forensic applications. Its goal is to demonstrate how handheld and portable Raman systems can address common challenges in the field: fluorescence interference, mixture analysis, low-level detection and precision micro-sampling. The suite includes the TacticID handheld Raman analyzer and the i-Raman EX portable Raman system with optional microscope coupling.

Methodology and Instrumentation

Raman spectroscopy exploits molecular vibrational frequencies to identify compounds based on their unique spectral fingerprints. A laser excitation (commonly 785 nm or 1064 nm) illuminates the sample and scattered light is collected to form a spectrum. Selection of excitation wavelength balances signal strength, fluorescence suppression and sample compatibility. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) further amplifies weak signals for trace-level detection by adsorbing analytes onto metallic substrates.

Used Instrumentation

  • TacticID Handheld Raman System (785 nm and 1064 nm): Rapid, non-contact identification of bulk narcotics, explosives, cutting agents and precursors in packaging or containers; mixture analysis and secure data storage.
  • TacticID TacPac Adaptor: SERS-based enhancement for trace detection of controlled substances and counterfeit APIs.
  • i-Raman EX Portable Raman System (1064 nm): Fiber-optic configuration with InGaAs detector, deep TE cooling and high dynamic range for dark or colored samples; adaptable for solids, liquids and slurries.
  • Raman Video Microscope Accessory: Precision micro-sampling via integrated camera monitoring, enabling targeted analysis at a fraction of lab-scale microscope cost.

Main Results and Discussion

Field demonstrations showed that 785 nm excitation rapidly identifies most organic materials, while 1064 nm excitation on i-Raman EX effectively overcomes fluorescence in dark street heroin and cut samples. The TacticID system delivered clear, operator-independent results in seconds and maintained chain-of-custody through timestamped records. SERS on the TacPac enabled detection of low‐level APIs and contaminants, supporting counterfeit drug screening. The portable microscope delivered high-precision mapping and differentiation of microscopic inclusions.

Benefits and Practical Applications

  • Non-destructive, contactless analysis preserves evidence integrity.
  • Rapid screening accelerates on-scene decision making.
  • Mixed sample deconvolution identifies major components without laboratory separation.
  • Trace detection via SERS enhances sensitivity for low-concentration analytes.
  • Flexible form factors support field and laboratory environments.
  • Automated data handling ensures reproducibility and compliance.

Future Trends and Opportunities

Advances in STRaman™ technology promise reduced thermal effects on sensitive samples. Integration with machine learning and spectral databases will enhance automated identification and reduce false positives. Expanded use of handheld Raman in remote and resource-limited settings can democratize access to forensic analysis. Continued miniaturization and cost reduction will drive broader adoption in law enforcement, border security and pharmaceutical QA/QC.

Conclusion

B&W Tek’s Raman Solution Suite combines portable and handheld Raman spectroscopy, SERS enhancement and microscope coupling to deliver comprehensive forensic analysis capabilities. By offering high specificity, rapid results and versatile instrumentation, this suite bridges field screening and laboratory-grade identification to support a wide range of forensic applications.
