How to Achieve Oil-Free Conditions in the Laboratory

Especially for the two technologies inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC/MS), Pfeiffer Vacuum developed the SmartVane, a hermetically sealed rotary vane vacuum pump which guarantees absolutely no oil leaks or contamination. This single-stage oil-sealed rotary vane pump has no shaft seals and, thus, eliminates the number one source of oil leaks. With its revolutionary design, it offers multiple benefits to its users: The SmartVane requires significantly less maintenance than other rotary vane pumps, has a low noise level, and allows uncomplicated installation in the existing installation space. With its high pumping speed even challenging tasks can be completed in a pleasant working environment.
Advantages of the first rotary vane pump specifically for mass spectrometry.
In the webinar you will receive valuable tips on vacuum pumps for mass spectrometer system with less contamination, noise and energy consumption and learn how to achieve the optimal results for your application.
Key Learnings:
- The importance of vacuum for the measurement
- Types of vacuum pumps for ICP-MS and LC/MS applications
- Advantages of a hermetically sealed pump
- Comparison of different pumping principles for mass spectrometry
- Difference of the SmartVane to the classic rotary vane pumps
Presenter: Steffen Herrmann (Head of Product Management Industrial Vacuum, Pfeiffer Vacuum)
Steffen Herrmann joined Pfeiffer Vacuum in 2009 after accomplishing his degree in mechanical engineering. He worked as a project manager in the R&D department before transferring to product management in 2014. He is responsible for the product portfolio of primary vacuum pumps for industrial and analytical applications.
Presenter: Dr. Conrad Bender (Technical Coach, Pfeiffer Vacuum)
Dr. Conrad Bender studied chemistry at University Giessen and completed his PhD in electrochemistry / battery research. He joined Pfeiffer Vacuum in 2019 as an expert for mass spectrometers. Since 2021 he has been a technical trainer at PV Academy, a company’s own academy. Here he teaches customers and employees all kind of vacuum knowledge. His courses are designed for both beginners and experts, and cover the full range of topics, from the basics of vacuum technology, to various types of pumps, measuring instruments, mass spectrometers and leak detection equipment.
Presenter: Dr. Cecilia Kruszynski (Editor Wiley Analytical Science, Wiley)
Cecilia Kruszynski is a technical editor for Wiley Analytical Science Magazine. She studied biology at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, specializing in Applied Ecology using Stable Isotope Analysis during her master’s at the Centre for Nuclear Energy in Agriculture, Brazil. During her Ph.D. at Freie University Berlin, Germany, she worked on bat migration assessed through stable isotopes.
