Agilent Technologies: Agilent Webinars On Demand
Agilent Technologies: Agilent Webinars On Demand

The rapid growth of the cannabis industry has provided a rare opportunity for scientists to be part of an emerging field.  With that expansion, concerns related to the growth, extraction, and chemical analysis of cannabis have also increased.  As new jurisdictions allow for cannabis, a disparate and constantly evolving compliance world has been created.  Ideas for leveraging the research capabilities of academics to enhance problem solving and workflow optimization when working with the cannabis industry will be presented.

Key Learning Objectives:

  • Strategies for building a strong team in a cannabis facility
  • Approaches for addressing challenges of cannabis analysis
  • Understanding the intersection of product quality and safety

Who Should Attend:

  • Future or current cannabis lab managers
  • Future or current cannabis testing lab analysts and chemists
  • Entrepreneurs considering starting a cannabis testing lab

Presenter: Steven Johnson, Ph.D. (Dean, College of Science and the Environment, Lake Superior State University)

Dr. Steven Johnson earned his PhD in chemistry from Michigan Technological University focusing on heterologous expression of proteins. After completing a postdoctoral position working on the use of the botulinum toxin for the delivery of therapeutic cargo to neural cells, he accepted a faculty position at the University of New England. In 2013, Dr. Johnson returned to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to join the faculty at Lake Superior State University. During his time at LSSU, he has served as co-chair for the School of Physical Science, chair for the School of Science and Medicine, and now, as Dean for the College of Science and the Environment. As Dean, LSSU introduced a bachelor’s degree in Cannabis Chemistry, which prepares graduates for the burgeoning cannabis sector in the State of Michigan and beyond.

Presenter: Ryan Ratzloff (CEO/President, Lion Labs)

Ryan Ratzloff has been a part of the cannabis industry in Michigan since its early, caregiver-based days. With over 10 years of experience in growing, processing, and marketing cannabis-based products, Ryan and the Lion Labs Ltd organization have established a standard of excellence across several categories with their award-winning and successful brands: Element, Dream, and RISE. Ryan also brings 10+ years of CPG experience from his early career at PepsiCo.

Presenter: Anthony Macherone, Ph.D. (Strategic Technical Scientist, Agilent Technologies, Inc.)

Dr. Macherone leads a team of scientists for the development and deployment of analytical testing methodologies for cannabis and hemp products. Anthony has written extensively on cannabis testing and contributed several chapters to books about cannabis. In June 2020, Anthony joined Cannabis Science and Technology®’s Editorial Advisory Board.

Presenter: Derek Wright, Ph.D. (Associate Professor of Environmental Science, Lake Superior State University)

Dr. Derek Wright is an Associate Professor of Environmental Science at Lake Superior State University. Dr. Wright earned his Ph.D. in Environmental Science from Rutgers University in 2008, with an emphasis of the biogeochemical cycles of trace elements in the marine systems. In his more than 20 years of experience with trace element analysis, he has extensive experience in ICP-MS (quadrupole and sector field), ICP-OES, MP-AES, and AAS. He has utilized these techniques for the accurate and precise measurement of challenging sample types such as seawater, hydrothermal vent fluids, atmospheric deposition, biological tissues, soils, foods, and sediments.

During his time at LSSU, he has served as chair for the School of Physical Sciences, and taught coursework in Environmental Science, Environmental Chemistry, and Environmental Health. In addition to trace element analysis his research also utilizes microbial source tracking methods.

Presenter:  Alexander Adams (CEO, Cambium Analytica)

Alexander Adams is the Co-Founder and CEO of Cambium Analytica, an analytical laboratory Traverse City, MI that is a full service provider of regulatory compliance testing, product research & development, and quality assurance / quality control services to the cannabis industry. He received a degree in Plant Biology from Michigan State University and has spent the past decade working in many areas of Michigan’s specialty crop agriculture industry.

Presenter: Dr. Markus Roggen (President/CSO, Delic Labs)

Dr. Markus Roggen is President and Chief Scientific Officer of Delic Labs, a licensed cannabis and psilocybin research laboratory focused on extraction optimization, analytical testing, and process development. Delic Labs is one of a handful of research labs licensed for both cannabis and psilocybin in Canada. Delic Labs was initially founded as Complex Biotech Discovery Ventures by Dr. Roggen and Prof. Dr. Glenn Sammis in 2018, and rebranded after the sale to Delic Corp.

Dr. Roggen received his M/Sci degree from Imperial College, London, UK in 2008. He then pursued his graduate degree in organic chemistry at the Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich (ETHZ), where he received his PhD in 2012. Dr. Roggen was awarded an DAAD postdoctoral fellowship to pursue further training in physical organic chemistry at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla in 2013-2014. He then entered the cannabis industry in 2014 and since has held executive positions in analytical and production companies. His research into process optimization and analytical methods has been recognized with a number of awards, ElSohley Award of the ACS, Cannabis Scientist Power List 2020 & 2021, 40 under 40 by Marijuana Venture Magazine among others. Dr. Roggen is also a trusted advisor and mentor to multiple startups, startup accelerators and organizations.

Presenter: R. Adam Mosey, Ph.D. (Associate Professor of Chemistry, Lake Superior State University)

Adam Mosey earned his PhD in Chemistry from Michigan State University and completed a postdoctoral appointment at the University of Pittsburgh before joining Lake Superior State University as an assistant professor in 2012. His research background lies the areas of organic synthesis and drug development. He currently teaches courses in Organic Chemistry, Cannabis Chemistry, and Molecular Spectroscopy, and his current research interests involve reaction development, drug design, NMR method development, and methods of cannabinoid extraction and characterization.

Presenter: Jonathan Kane, Ph.D. (Chief Scientific Officer, Lion Labs)

Prior to entering the cannabis space, Dr. Kane has a demonstrated history of working in preclinical research with a focus on cancer and stem cell biology and success in biotech sales focusing on preclinical radiation-based research systems. Since leaving the preclinical research space in 2018, Jonathan have taken the role as Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Officer at Lion Labs, a medical and adult-use state licensed cannabis processor located in Michigan. Jonathan received his PhD in Biomedical and Biological Sciences in 2016 from Oakland University.
