Thermo Fisher Scientific: Real-time Monitoring of Polymer Blend Extrusion Using an Inline Process Raman Analyzer

Continuous monitoring of polymer extrusion processes is crucial for increased operation efficiency, reduced waste and improved product quality. Monitoring and optimization of these processes can generate significant operational efficiencies, reduce waste, and improve product quality.

This 30-minute webinar will explore findings from a recent study where a process Raman analyzer was coupled to a parallel twin-screw extruder for continuous in-line monitoring of polymer extrusion. Register to discover how real-time Raman spectroscopy can provide critical insights into polymer compositional and process conditions.

What You’ll Learn

  • How Raman spectroscopy enables real-time, in-line monitoring of the polymer extrusion process
  • Insights into how different polymer blends and process conditions impact extrusion outcomes
  • The durability and performance of Raman probes under high-temperature extrusion conditions (150-170ºC)
  • The role of multivariate models in analyzing Raman spectra for accurate quality assessment
  • How this technology helps optimize production, minimize defects, and enhance overall efficiency

Who Should Attend:

  • Process engineers and polymer scientists seeking advanced monitoring solutions for extrusion
  • Quality control and R&D teams focused on improving polymer product consistency
  • Manufacturing and operations professionals aiming to enhance efficiency and reduce material waste
  • Anyone interested in real-time analytical techniques for polymer processing

Presenter: Janam Pandya, Ph.D. (Application Scientist, Measurement Control and Sample Identification)

Janam Pandya is an enthusiastic scientist and spectroscopist with ten years of academic and industry experience. Janam obtained his Ph.D. in food science from the University of Massachusetts Amherst; there his research focused on developing novel analytical methods utilizing cutting-edge Raman spectroscopic techniques. Since 2022, Janam has worked for Thermo Fisher Scientific as an application scientist, advancing the application of Raman Spectroscopy for real-time process measurements. This includes his current focus on implementing process Raman spectroscopy as a PAT tool in the clean-energy sector, among other industries.

Presenter: Lucivan P. Barros, Ph.D. (Sr Product Specialist, Production Process and Analytics)

Dr. Lucivan Barros holds a bachelor's and master's degree in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from the State University of Rio de Janeiro and a Ph.D. in Macromolecular Science from Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, OH). He later joined Case Western as a Research Associate, leading projects on TPU synthesis, melt processing, and molecular design to enhance mechanical and viscoelastic properties. With expertise in polymer processing, materials science, and plastic technology, he specializes in developing advanced materials and improving structure-property relationships. Currently, as a Senior Applications Scientist at Thermo Fisher Scientific, he focuses on application development and support for extrusion and rheology products, driving innovation in material characterization.
